The Weight We Don't See: Suicide Prevention Month Matters

Suicide Prevention Matters

This month began with a conversation about healthy aging: how to protect the body, nourish it, move through the years with strength and grace. That conversation was never only about the body. Aging well has always meant something deeper too, the kind of care that asks how a person is really doing beneath the surface, not just how well they are eating or sleeping or moving.

That question, "how are you really doing," is the same question at the heart of what September asks of everyone next. It is Suicide Prevention Month, a time set aside to say plainly what too often stays silent: pain that cannot be seen is still pain that deserves to be met with care. Growing older, growing wiser, growing well, none of it means much if the people walking that path are quietly struggling and no one notices.

The Signs We Often Miss

Somewhere near you today, someone is carrying something they have not found words to express This could be a neighbor, coworker, family member, friend or even foe who always seems fine but behind the mask they are not. Suicide does not always look like what people expect. Sometimes it looks like exhaustion. Sometimes it looks like someone who smiles easily and still feels unbearably alone. The people most in pain are often the ones who have gotten the best at hiding it.

This is why Suicide Prevention Month matters, and why September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day, exists as more than a date on a calendar. It is a global reminder that awareness alone does not save lives but action does. A phone call, hand on a shoulder, the willingness to ask someone directly, "are you okay, really," does. It's time to act don't you think?

Why 988 Matters

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is not just a number; it is an actual lifeline in the truest sense, a direct connection to trained counselors who understand what it means to sit with someone in their darkest moment without judgment. Whether the crisis belongs to a person themselves or someone they love, 988 is there, free and confidential, every hour of every day.

Presence Over Perfection

Healing, wellness, and community work, all are rooted in the belief that people are worth showing up for. Suicide prevention is an extension of that same belief. It asks people to look past the surface, past the "I'm fine, I'm doing okay" or any of the performances so many carry to survive the day, and to actually see one another as real human beings that may be going through a tough time right now in life.

Please hear me loud and clear when I say prevention does not always require you, yeah you the reader of this blog post to be an expert, it simply requires that you be still and be present knowing that sometimes all people really need is a shoulder to cry on or someone to ask hard questions and be there for them. Know this, silence has never once saved a life. However, reaching out or checking in on others has. Ponder on that for a moment.

For Those Left Behind

This month is also for the ones left behind, the family members and friends who carry a grief that society rarely knows how to hold. Their pain deserves acknowledgment too. Suicide loss is not something to move past quietly. It is something to be supported through, together, and in community.

Wellness has never been only about smoothies and self-care rituals as many portray it to be; real wellness includes mental health, emotional safety, and making room for the hardest conversations, because the people around us cannot heal what they are too afraid to say.

So this September, check in on the people who seem fine. Ask twice or three times if you feel that it is necessary. Listen without rushing to fix anything. Share the 988 number. Say the words "you matter,""you really do matter" to someone who may not have heard them in a long time or ever. This could be the difference that changes everything.

What you water will grow, even hope. Especially hope.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available right now.
