Mental Health Awareness Month: The Burden You’ve Normalized

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year we are doing things differently at Nurture What Matters. We are not just going to talk about mental health as we have in the past; we are going even deeper. We are going to be talking about the invisible weight you are carrying every day that you have been struggling with. We are talking about the cortisol that has been flooding your system before your feet even hit the floor after waking up. That burnout you keep calling, your busy season. The emotional exhaustion you have learned to push through because you feel like you have no other choice. The 2026 theme for Mental Health Awareness Month is More Good Days, Together. However, if you are being honest, some days do not feel good at all; we get it, but you can do something about it if you want to. Think about that and let's start something good today.
It Is Not Just In Your Head
Mental health is not just something you think about; it is often something you feel in your body. It shows up in how you wake up all tired. How your patience runs thin. How your thoughts feel heavier than they should. How disconnected you feel from yourself, even when everything on the outside seems fine. This is what chronic stress looks like. This is what burnout feels like when it goes unaddressed for an extended period.
Getting Honest with Oneself
This is the part where we stop pretending everything is fine. This is where you get honest about what is really happening beneath the surface inside you. Not what you tell everyone else. Not what you push through. What is actually there, and it is okay to be vulnerable with yourself.
• Cortisol overload that has your body stuck in a constant state of stress
• Burnout, you have normalized just to keep going
• Emotional patterns you have not had the space or support to process and heal
If you see yourself in this way, note that it is not failure. That this is awareness, and awareness is the moment things begin to shift. The moment you become conscious of how you are living and decide you want something different is where real change starts. Now it is time to support your system in a different way. Not just so you can keep functioning, but so you can finally start feeling better.
You Are Not Meant To Live Like This
You were not meant to live in a constant state of survival. Waking up exhausted, pushing through your day on empty, and calling it normal is not the life you were designed for. Feeling overwhelmed all the time is not a sign that you are doing well; it is a sign that something needs your attention. There is a difference between showing up for your life and slowly draining yourself to keep everything going.
More good days do not come from pushing harder. They come from making small, intentional choices that support your energy, mind, spirit, and body so you can begin to feel like yourself again.
Start Here this Mental Health Awareness Month
If you are tired of feeling this way, begin with something simple and real:
• Take a moment to check in with yourself
Pause. Breathe. Notice where you feel tension in your body and what you are holding on to mentally.
• Do one thing today to lower your stress response
Step outside. Get fresh air. Take a short walk. Even a few minutes can help your body reset
• Stop calling burnout normal
Exhaustion, irritability, and overwhelm are signals that something needs attention
• Reach out to someone you trust
You do not have to carry everything on your own
• Get support from a professional (see below)
Support is not a last resort. It is a powerful step forward

Your Next Step Begins Here This Mental Health Awareness Month
At Nurture What Matters, we are asking you to do something simple, but not easy.
Slow down long enough to be honest with yourself about what is really going on. Begin repairing what you have been pushing aside, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.
Choose yourself in a way that protects your energy, your peace, and your future, not just your responsibilities. You can keep pushing through and calling it normal, or you can decide that you are ready for something different.
More good days are ahead, you already feel that deep down inside of you. The decisions you make to take care of yourself, even when it would be easier not to, matter more now than you can ever imagine. Remember everything starts with you.
When You Need A Reminder
There will be days when things just feels harder than they should. Days when you slip back into old patterns. Days when you forget everything you just read. That is part of the process.
Sometimes, what you need is not more information; you just need a moment, a pregnant pause; a simple reminder that brings you back to yourself. That is why we encourage our clients & customers to use Thoughtfulls.
Check them out here. They are simple, yet intentional cards you can reach for when your mind is loud, when your energy is low, or when you need something steady to hold onto. A few words that can shift your perspective, ground you, and remind you of what is still true to you. Keep them where you can see them. Use them when you need them. Let them support you on the days when doing it alone feels like too much to handle. Because even then, you are still moving forward.
