A Work in Progress: Living, Learning, & Finding Clarity That Helps You Embrace the Dash!

You Are Not Behind. You Are in Your Dash.

There is a moment, and if you are honest with yourself, you have had it more than once, where you look at your life and think; I should be further along by now. Maybe it comes quietly, in the space between waking and rising. Maybe it arrives loud, dressed as comparison, scrolling through someone else's highlight reel at midnight. Maybe it shows up as frustration after a conversation that did not go the way you had wanted it to, or a goal that keeps slipping just past your reach. That feeling is not failure. It is actually something far more sacred. It is your consciousness awakening within you.

The Truth Nobody Says Out Loud

We live in a world that rewards arrival or material things. Finished products. Polished presentations. Before-and-after photos with the caption; I made it. But life, real life, does not work that way. Real life has a middle. That middle is often quite messy, filled with uncertainty, and lots of imperfection. The longer we pretend otherwise, the more exhausted we become trying to be someone we are not.

Listen, you are not behind. You are not broken. You are not a project that failed to launch. You are a work in progress, and that is one of the most honest, courageous things a person can be.

The Dash

Come on, won't you go with me somewhere for a moment? Picture a headstone. You have seen them. Maybe you have stood in front of one and felt that strange, quiet discomfort that comes over you, the kind that makes you look away faster than you had planned to . There is a name. There is a year of birth. There is a year of death. And in between those two numbers, separated by something so small you could almost miss it, is a dash. That dash. That tiny, humble, easy-to-overlook dash is your life.

You had no say in the year you were born, and most of us will not choose the year we leave this earth, but the dash is entirely yours to take. Every morning you open your eyes is the dash. Every hard conversation you finally had, every dream you talked yourself into and out of and back into again, every time you loved someone and it cost you something, every time you chose to get back up, that is the dash. It is the middle, and that middle is where all of it happens.

We spend so much time rushing past it, uncomfortable with it, trying to outrun it. We fill it with noise, plans, comparisons, and deadlines because sitting in the middle feels unfinished. It feels like waiting. It feels like not enough.

But here is what I need you to hear and comprehend, especially if you are pausing right now. The middle is not the waiting room. The middle is the main event.

Every single person you have ever admired, every person whose life looked like it came together beautifully, every person who seemed to have the clarity you are still searching for, they lived in the middle just like you. They stumbled into it. They cried in it. They questioned everything in it. They sat in parking lots and had conversations with themselves that nobody else heard. They woke up at 3:00 or 4:00 AM with a heart full of doubt and a head full of noise. And then they got up and kept going.

That is what the dash actually looks like up close. Time is moving whether we are conscious of it or not, and the question the dash quietly asks every single day is “Are you living in it, or are you just passing through?”

You were not given this life to be a spectator. You were not given your body, mind, this particular set of experiences, wounds, gifts, and second and 10th chances to sit on the sidelines of your own story waiting until everything feels ready. Nothing will ever feel completely ready. That is the nature of becoming.

The dash is your invitation right now, in the middle of the unfinished, messy, uncertain, still-figuring-it-out phase that you may be going through. This moment, this exact moment you are in, is the life you have been given to live. So live it consciously, gently, and on purpose.

And if you need to read that again and again out loud, please do. You probably needed to hear your own voice say it. You are not behind. You are not broken. You are beautifully, powerfully, exactly in your dash.

What Gentleness Actually Costs

Here is what I have learned through my own stumbles, my own restarts, and the quiet moments where I had to choose myself again; gentleness is not weakness; it is the discipline of seeing yourself clearly without destroying yourself in the process.

When we are hard on ourselves, we do not move faster. We move smaller. We shrink, we second-guess, and we stop before we start because the inner critic has already decided the outcome.

But when we choose consciousness, when we slow down enough to ask what do I actually need right now, and what is this moment asking of me, something shifts. Clarity comes in, and clarity is where real movement begins.

A Small Mini Card That Changed Something in Me

I want to tell you about the Thoughtfuls. They are mini cards, small enough to hold in your palm, yet powerful enough to stay with you all day. Each one carries a message that meets you exactly where you are. Not where you think you should be, but where you are.

I started keeping one nearby during seasons of transition, and what surprised me was not just the words. It was the permission the words gave me. Permission to feel it, to name it, and to keep going anyway.

Sometimes the most profound shifts begin with something simple, like a single sentence that lands in your chest and says something like yes, this is true, and you are going to be okay. That is what Thoughtfulls do and have done for me. It reminds you that you are worth the reflection. Pick one up, place it somewhere you will see it every day, and let it meet you in your dash.

From Reflection to Results — The CART Method

Awareness is the beginning, but awareness without action is just a beautiful thought. That is why the work we do here at Nurture What Matters with clients is built around the CART Method:

  • C — Clarity: Getting honest about where you are and what you truly want.

  • A — Action: Identifying the specific, intentional steps that move you forward.

  • R — Results: Measuring what is working and refining without judgment.

  • T — Transformation: Because when you do this work consistently, you do not just reach your goals. You become someone new.

This is not about fixing yourself. It is about knowing yourself deeply enough to stop repeating patterns that no longer serve you, and being brave enough to build the life that actually does.

Your Next Step Starts Here

If something in these words touched you, that is not an accident. That is your consciousness speaking, and it deserves to be honored with action.

Book your complimentary 15-minute Clarity Call with us here. Bring your questions, your honest self, and exactly where you are in this moment. We will get clear, take action, and move toward the results and transformation that are already waiting for you.

You are not a finished product. You are beautifully, powerfully, exactly in your dash.

And that is exactly more than enough.

Nurture What Matters — Clarity. Action. Results. = Transformation.
