When was the last time you took yourself on a date? When was the last time you genuinely wanted to spend time with yourself? Those are worthwhile questions to consider.

You see, we often spend so much of our lives seeking acceptance, love, and approval from others that we can forget to nurture the relationship we have with ourselves. We wait for someone to invite us, celebrate us, validate us, or make us feel special. Meanwhile, we postpone our own happiness as if it must be earned or granted by someone else. But what if we stopped waiting and started taking action?

The Nurture What Matters Philosophy

At Nurture What Matters™, we believe what you focus on grows. When you continually focus on meeting other people's expectations, you can lose sight of your own interests, desires, and dreams. Dating yourself gives you the opportunity to turn inward, discover what genuinely makes you happy, and learn to enjoy your own company.

You do not have to become someone else to deserve your own love. You can begin right where you are, with the person you are today.

Here are eight ways to start dating yourself.

1. Take Yourself Out to Eat

It does not matter whether it is morning, noon, or night. Become conscious and intentional about choosing a restaurant you have always wanted to try. Order what you genuinely want, put your phone away, and enjoy the experience. You do not need a companion to make a meal special. Let yourself savor the food, the atmosphere, and the pleasure of doing something simply because you want to and know you will enjoy it.

2. Spend a Day in Nature

Visit a botanical garden, walk along the water, explore a trail, or find a peaceful park. Give yourself permission to slow down without a packed schedule or someone else's demands. Notice what catches your attention. Sometimes, stepping away from the noise of everyday life helps you hear yourself more clearly.

3. Discover What Makes You Laugh

Watch a comedy, revisit a favorite movie, attend a show, or do something that makes you smile. You do not need to justify every interest by making it productive. Happiness is not a reward reserved for the end of a difficult week. Joy belongs in your life now.

4. Take Yourself Somewhere New

Visit a museum, explore a neighborhood, browse a bookstore, or take a day trip. Follow your curiosity. You may discover interests you never knew you had simply because you finally gave yourself the opportunity to explore them. You do not have to wait for someone else's availability to experience something wonderful.

5. Enjoy Your Own Company Without Distractions

Sit quietly with your thoughts. Journal, listen to music, prepare a beautiful meal, or enjoy a cup of tea without immediately reaching for your phone. Notice what happens when you are no longer filling every quiet moment with outside noise. Solitude can become an opportunity to understand yourself rather than something you feel compelled to escape.

6. Change the Way You Speak to Yourself

Listen to your inner conversation. Would you speak to someone you love the way you speak to yourself? Notice the criticism, comparisons, and judgments you repeat. You do not have to accept every thought as truth. Practice speaking to yourself with the same honesty, patience, and compassion you would offer someone you care about.

Self-love does not mean believing you are perfect. It means recognizing your worth while giving yourself room to learn, grow, and make mistakes.

7. Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To

Plan a regular date with yourself. It could be a massage, a cooking class, a concert, a new recipe, or an afternoon devoted entirely to something you enjoy. You do not need to wait for a birthday, a relationship, a promotion, or a special occasion to celebrate being alive. You are allowed to create beautiful experiences for yourself simply because you are here.

8. Protect Your Peace and Choose Your Influences

Pay attention to how you feel around people, in certain environments, and after consuming particular content. Connection can enrich your life, but constant exposure to criticism, comparison, and negativity can make it harder to hear your own voice. Establish boundaries that support your well-being. You can love people without giving everyone unlimited access to your time and energy.

What If You Had Started Dating Yourself Sooner?

Everyone is different, and learning to enjoy solitude is something anyone can cultivate.

Perhaps you spent years competing for attention, trying to fit in, or measuring your worth through other people's opinions. Maybe you became so accustomed to accommodating everyone else that you stopped asking yourself a simple question: What makes me happy?

You can ask yourself that question right now. More importantly, give yourself permission to answer honestly.

Why have I not chosen to date myself sooner? What might I discover if I gave myself the time, attention, and love I have been waiting to receive from others?

These questions are not an invitation to regret the past. They are an opportunity to embrace the present. You do not need outside approval to determine your worth. When you learn to appreciate who you are, you can make choices from a place of self-respect rather than a need to be accepted. You can enjoy relationships without depending on them to complete you. You can grow without treating the person you are today as someone who is not yet good enough.

At Nurture What Matters™, we believe conscious living begins with the choices we make every day. Your relationship with yourself deserves the same care and attention you give to the people and priorities that matter most to you.

So make the plans. Explore what excites you. Discover what brings you peace, what makes you laugh, what sparks your curiosity, and what makes you feel most alive.

Fall in love with the person you are right now. Today. Not someday, when everything is perfect for that day may never come.

Your next date does not have to wait for an invitation. Show up for yourself now. You may discover that the person you have been waiting to know, appreciate, and love has been with you all along.

Nurture What Matters™

Consciously living every day.
